About the Porth

Y Porth is the main platform for delivering and managing Welsh medium provision for student members of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol studying in universities across Wales. It is a national e-learning platform utilising systems such as Blackboard Learn and Mediacore.

In addition to hosting hundreds of university modules developed by staff funded through the Coleg's Academic Staffing Scheme, the Porth also offers an area to host educational resources in a wide range of subject areas funded through the Coleg’s project schemes, many of which are open access and available to users beyond the higher education sector.

Establishing Y Porth

During 2008, the Centre for Welsh Medium Higher Education and representatives from Higher Education Institutions across Wales considered new flexible ways of sharing Welsh medium open educational resources and managing collaborative modules. Following an agreement to establish an independent e-learning platform for the Welsh medium university sector, and securing financial support from HEFCW, 'Y Porth' was launched by the Centre in August 2009 in the presence of the Minister for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills.

The Porth’s technological developments since its establishment in 2009, and the development of Welsh medium modules and Open Educational Resources since the Coleg's inception in 2011, has been critical in creating a virtual Welsh-medium academic community. This is reflected in the scale of the Porth staff register which includes over 800 Welsh-medium academic and support staff who work within the university sector.
